Course summary

This one day course is designed for those who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding of Dementia in working with people who have learning disabilities. This course also looks at the social stigma related to Dementia. The learner will be able to identify how to respond to some of the behaviours which can be portrayed as challenging within people with Dementia.

Learners will be able to:

  • Support a person to maintain skills and independence for as long as possible
  • Describe how to treat, treatable conditions
  • Understand and respond appropriately to changes in behaviour, at early, middle and late stages of dementia
  • Know how to provide emotional reassurance for carers
  • Know how to improve the confidence of carers to look after individuals
  • Discuss how to identify local supports and resources
  • Identify common themes:- Behaviour, communication, confusion, moods etc
  • Identify daily living issues:- dressing, feeding and personal care
  • Identify additional health issues
  • Understand late stages of dementia:- mobility, skin care, eating/nutrition and safety issues
